Born to Devassy and Alia at Moolan Tharavad, Angamaly, Varghese Moolan had his Education at St. Joseph’s High school, Angamally; PDC at Sacred Heart College Thevara, Ernakulam and graduated in Zoology, Botany and Chemistry from Sree Sankara College, Kalady. He took post graduate diploma in Management Administration from Aligarh University.
He was the college basket ball captain of Sree Sankara College in the year 1977. He was the Ernakulam District secretary of All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) for two consecutive years during 1976 & 1977.
During the campus period, wrote two novels: the first one “Thekku” (manual pumping of water) got the third place in the Mammen Mappila Award competiton, and the second novel “Erimalayil orabhayam” (‘taking refuge in a burning volcano’) got the fifth grade in the Kumkumam Award competition.
After Graduation, Varghese got employed in the leading News paper, Indian Express in Madras, Tamilnadu. Later Got employed as the sales Manager of Santul India Ltd, in New Delhi. He has extensively traveled in all states and main cities of India in connection with company sales.
During this period he took Post Graduate Diploma in Management Administration from Aligarh Muslim University.
He used to write articles in the leading publications like times of India, Indian Express and Manorama Suppliment under the pen names of Anuranj and Niranjker.
The third novel named “Ee pravasikalil Oruvan” (one amongst these migrants) written while working in north India during 1980, is published in the form of Book, with the preface written by the famous writer ‘Zachariah’.
During 1979 varghese was deployed by Malayala Manorama, to study about the ‘Savara’ aboriginals living in Khondwana, situated on the joint borders of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa states in north India. The thesis was published in Manorama Newspaper in 9 chapters under the caption, “some of the fourth grade citizens of our nation”
During 1981 Varghese migrated to Saudi Arabia as the manager of Al-Saleh Group of Companies. Later he opened “VIJAY Supermarket” at Al-khobar, during 1985. Then he started distribution of spices and groceries in Saudi Arabia during 1986.
Later he opened factory in India and started exporting spices and groceries in 1987 under the brand name “Vijay” regularly adding more products; increasing frequency in shipments and expanding areas and penetrating to more countries in the distribution of products under the brand names VIJAY, JAY, ROMA, MOOLANS etc which has eventually reached out to more than 35 countries of the world.
During the late 80s, in the initial stage of distribution of VIJAY food products in the gulf countries, the quality and packing of Indian spice products available in the international markets was so low that even Indians preferred Pakistani products. But by the implementation of incessant and rigorous marketing strategies including persistence of quality, adoption of international standards in packing, opted by Varghese, the International negative trend of the world market towards Indian Products slowly reversed and thus the demand for Indian Products started to increase steadily. Thus Indians, Arabs and finally Pakistanis also started deal and consume Indian Food Products.
During the late 80s, in the initial stage of distribution of VIJAY food products in the gulf countries, the quality and packing standards of Indian food products available in the international markets was so low that even Indians preferred other country products especially that of Pakistan.
Yet, by the implementation of incessant and rigorous marketing strategies including persistence of quality, adoption of international standards in packing, and timely distribution in the world markets opted by Varghese, the International negative trend of the world market towards Indian Products slowly reversed and thus, during the middle of 1990s, the demand for Indian Products started to increase steadily. Thus Indians, Arabs and finally Pakistanis also started deal with and consume Indian Food Products.
Varghese has extensively travelled in the world, and visited more than100 countries developing overseas markets of Vijay, Jay, Roma, Elite, Butterfly& other Moolans Group Products during the last 32 years, at the same time pursuing social setup among Indians, under Global Malayalee Council.
Now Moolans group own more than a dozen International manufacturing units, with more than 350 products manufactured and distributed in more than 35 countries worldwide. More than 650 persons, including Indians and foreigners are deployed under Moolans group in India and abroad.
There are more than a dozen retail and supermarket chains named Moolans Family Marts, Moolans Hyper Marts. Nicee Studio & Color-lab is another quality conscious institution abroad. More than two dozens of international marketing networks distribute Moolans group products world-wide effectively.
Varghese has extensively travelled all over 100 countries in the world, developing overseas markets of Vijay & Moolans Group Products during the last 36 years, and pursuing social setup among Indians, under Global Malayalee Council.
He is the first Indian to get the coveted Saudi Investment license (green card in Saudi Arabia) and the first Indian to become the member of the Saudi Chamber of Commerce during the year 2001. Accordingly Varghese started the first 100% self owned Indian factory at Dammam, Saudi Arabia under the name and style of “The House of Spices Factory Ltd,” investing more than Five Million Saudi Riyals (Presently approx. 9.00 Crores Indian Rupees)
He is the founder chairman of Global Malayalee Council in 1999, the global organization of resident & non-resident Indians striving for the socio-economic development of India especially Kerala.
With more than 2000 GMC members spread over 23 countries in the 5 continents, Global Malayalee Council convenes global meetings biannually in various cities of the world.
During the global meeting various charitable projects are executed including Kidney transplants, heart surgeries, medical camps, making homes for the homeless, offering ‘blood money’ to the deserving in the gulf, giving financial assistance to the poor etc. Along with the organization’s own charitable projects, GMC co-operates with various other relief projects, world-wide.
He established the “Varghese Moolan Foundation” during 2010 for diverting a part of the profits of his own company and has taken up a lot of charitable projects in India like building homes for the poor under the “home-sweet-home” project, financial assistance for various treatments, financial aid to the poor brides, donating auto taxi to poor families, etc.
The housing projects for the homeless, named “Home-Sweet-Home” has already completed building 6 houses and handed over the keys. The seventh house is under construction.
He launched the ‘TOUCH A HEART’ projects offering free comprehensive treatments including heart surgery to the paediatric cardiac patients less than 18 years.
‘TOUCH A HEART’ Phase-1, was launched along with the wedding celebrations of his son Vijay Varghese Moolan with Kashmeera. The project was executed in association with Apollo Hospitals Group, Chennai, offering free comprehensive treatments including heart surgery to 60 poor cardiac child patients, at the project cost of more than Rs.1 Crore.
‘TOUCH A HEART’ Phase-2, was launched in association with Amrita Hospital, Cochin offering free comprehensive treatments including heart surgery to 60 poor cardiac child patients, at the project cost of more than Rs.1 Crore, during the 30th anniversary celebrations of Moolans Group, in 2015.
‘TOUCH A HEART’ Phase-3, was launched in association with Lisie Hospital, Cochin, during 2016, offering free comprehensive treatments including cardiac surgeries to 80 poor cardiac child patients, at the project cost of more than Rs.1.30 Crores. The project was organized along with the wedding ceremony of his daughter Dr. Jaisree Varghese Moolan with Dr. Kiran Suresh, Sydney Australia.
The philanthropic project of “Nanma Maram” The tree of virtue, was inaugurated by Cine artist Sri. Suresh Gopi M.P., by which food packs and dresses are freely distributed on a daily basis among the neediest of the society.
A Keyboard Player, Varghese, recently published a devotional Audio CD, named Deivikam, in which he himself wrote the lyrics and composed music of some songs.
‘Moolans Media Creations’ a “Dr. Varghese Moolan Group” Concern created many Television Documentaries and Tele-films in some of which Varghese has acted.
He was conferred with Doctorate (PhD) for his thesis “Marketing management with special relevance to food” in 2010 at Kuala Lumpur.

During March 2017, He was honored by the ‘Order of Golden Peace Maker’ ( Medal ) conferred by the Deputy Speaker MP. Svintsov Andrey Nicolaevich at the Russian Parliament ( Duma ) at Moscow, Russia for his philanthropic activities in the Middle East and other continents.
Wife Jane, post graduate in Economics, and previously a college lecturer, is now assisting in business management.
Son Vijay schooled at Wisconsin, USA, graduated in Engineering at Michigan University, USA and took MBA from Wales University, UK, is managing the home business in the Middle East countries. Daughter-in-law Kashmeera, post-graduated in computer science, is housewife.
Daughter, Dr. Jaisree Varghese Moolan, is married to Dr Kiran Suresh and working at Alice spring, Australia as Medical Officer and studying for M.D. in General Medicine.
Son-in-law, Dr. Kiran Suresh, son of Dr. Suresh Nair, Senior partner of M/s Minto- Mall Medical Center, Sydney one of the leading multi-specialty Hospital in Australia, is working at Alice spring govt. Hospital, Australia as Medical Officer and pursing for his MS in Psychiatry.
